In early November, I got handed three films to score and was given a month to do all three.
I got involved with the student filmmakers at TCU this semester, trying to make my presence known as a composer. I didn't anticipate three of the four Student Film Association films to hire me as the composer. Each of the three films were different-- one was a dark horror film, one was a fast-paced comedy, and the third was a mockumentary-style film. Combined, the films totaled about an hour in length. I dug in right away. I loved collaborating and communicating with each of the directors about their visions and preferences. The director of the horror film, Brad Ramsey, was especially enthusiastic about the score to his film. I got creative with that score and crafted some weird sounds. For example, I recorded my infant sister crying and distorted it to make a scratching/crackling noise. I also had the opportunity to record a live choir, which can be seen here. The films turned out to be really great and we had a successful premiere night. Everyone was happy with the work I did and I got a lot of applause. I look forward to working with these talented directors in the future. The soundtracks for all three films are out now on all major streaming services.
